Tooth Infection

When bacteria enter the tooth and find its way into the root of the tooth, it causes a buildup of pus. A tooth infection, mostly called abscessed tooth can put some form of pains to form in your mouth as a result of a bacterial infection. It’s mainly caused by injuries, tooth decay, and previous dental work while tooth infections can cause severe pains, swelling and sensitivity, and if left untreated could also spread to other parts of the body including the brain.

Hence, if you are suffering from a tooth infection, you may need an antibiotic for tooth infection, but not all tooth infections require antibiotics. In most cases, there are common antibiotics can a dentist prescribe that may be able to drain off the abscess while other cases may require removal of the tooth infected or root canal. However, antibiotics are mainly used when the infection is severe, has spread to other parts or you have a weak immune system.

There are different types of antibiotics, but the kind you will require depends on the type of bacteria causing the tooth infection because the various classes of antibiotics have peculiar ways of attacking bacteria. The following are the common types of medicines for treating tooth infections.

• Penicillin

The primary function of the penicillin is to burst the cell wall of the bacteria. The penicillin-class drugs work by directly acting on peptidoglycans that plays a vital structural roll in the cells infected by bacteria.

Amoxicillin• Amoxicillin

Amoxicillin is a class of penicillin antibiotics used for fighting bacteria. The drug is used in tooth infections and many other types of bacterial diseases like gonorrhea, bronchitis, pneumonia, bronchitis and several other infections of the urinary tract, throat, ear, nose and or skin.

• Metronidazole

This antibiotic can be used in treating different types of bacterial infections. It stops the growth of certain types of parasites and bacteria and very useful for treating tooth infections caused by bacteria. The Metronidazole antibiotics only treat certain parasitic and infections. It’s not suitable for viral infections such as the flu and the common cold.
